KNCC Secures Approval in Principle from Lloyd’s Register for Elevated Pressure LCO₂ Cargo System
Milano, Gastech 2025 — Knutsen NYK Carbon Carriers (KNCC) is proud to announce that Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) for its innovative Elevated Pressure Liquefied Carbon Dioxide (LCO₂-EP) cargo containment system. This milestone underscores KNCC’s commitment to advancing safe, efficient, and commercially viable solutions for maritime CO₂ transport.
The LCO₂-EP system is engineered to carry liquefied CO₂ at elevated pressures, significantly reducing the design needs for cryogenic temperatures. This breakthrough simplifies containment requirements and enables greater flexibility in vessel design—offering the CCS industry a more adaptable and cost-effective pathway to realize CCS projects.
The AiP follows a comprehensive design review conducted by Lloyd’s Register as part of a joint development project. LR’s technical expertise and guidance were instrumental in refining the system toward commercial readiness.
Oliver Hagen-Smith, CEO of KNCC, commented:
“Receiving Approval in Principle from Lloyd’s Register marks a pivotal achievement in our journey to deliver scalable and sustainable carbon transport solutions. This recognition validates our engineering approach and strengthens our position at the forefront of maritime decarbonisation. We deeply value our collaboration with Lloyd’s Register and look forward to continued innovation together.”
Panos Mitrou, LR's Global Gas Segment Director, commented:
“We are pleased to grant Approval in Principle to KNCC’s Elevated Pressure system, recognising it as a safe, practical technology that can support the maritime LCO₂ sector and aid decarbonisation goals set by the IMO and UN.”
